Tiger and Monkey compatibility

Neither of them gives way first, and the tradition never says one of them should. What it does place on the table is a direction: in this pair, one side gets shaped and the other side does the shaping.

The pair, inside the system

Tiger is the third branch, yin. Monkey is the ninth, shen. Six places apart, facing each other on the wheel. That position is the whole of the word clash at this level.

Now the part that decides how the argument runs. Both branches are Yang.

Not usually. Every Tiger year on the year chart carries Yang, and every Monkey year does too, whatever element sits on top. Ten Tiger years from 1926 to 2034. Ten Monkey years from 1932 to 2040.

Two Yang signs do not cancel each other out. They both go outward. Neither goes quiet to end a fight. Both raise the volume and wait for the other one to stop first.

Watch a pair like this for a month and the argument is rarely about the thing on the table. It is about who was going to decide it, and that question was settled before anyone sat down.

Compare them with the other five clash pairs. Four have a direction built into the branches themselves. Two have none.

Clash pairBranch elementsDirection at branch level
Rat and HorseWater, fireWater over fire
Ox and GoatEarth, earthNone. Same element, same polarity.
Tiger and MonkeyWood, metalMetal over wood
Rabbit and RoosterWood, metalMetal over wood
Dragon and DogEarth, earthNone. Same element, same polarity.
Snake and PigFire, waterWater over fire

Read the Tiger and Monkey row slowly. Metal cuts wood. The Tiger is the wood. So the friction in this pair is not symmetric, and it does not flip depending on who was born first.

One caution before that gets used as a verdict. That column is the element of the branch, not your year element. The year element rotates: 1974 is a Wood Tiger, 1986 a Fire Tiger, 1998 an Earth Tiger, 2010 a Metal Tiger, 2022 a Water Tiger.

Neither column is the villain. One states the case. The other tests it. Both are useful. Neither is polite about it.

Put both habits in one room and the case gets tested in public. That is the friction, and it is a workable one. A pair that only states the case never checks it. A pair that only tests never starts anything.

What neither of them notices in the first year is that the Tiger is not arguing about the restaurant and the Monkey is not arguing about the review, and both of them are arguing about whether the other one gets to be right in front of witnesses.

Real years, and the second layer

The animal is layer one. The year element is layer two. Layer two changes the answer.

TigerMonkey, six years laterYear elementsDirection
19741980Wood, metalMetal cuts wood. Both layers point at the Monkey.
19861992Fire, waterWater puts out fire. Both layers point at the Monkey.
19982004Earth, woodWood breaks earth. Both layers point at the Monkey.
20102016Metal, fireFire melts metal. Both layers point at the Monkey.
20222028Water, earthEarth dams water. Both layers point at the Monkey.

That table only works in one order, and the order matters more than it looks. Put the Monkey first instead. 1980, a Metal Monkey, with 1986, a Fire Tiger. Now the year element hands the shaping to the Tiger, because fire melts metal. The branch still hands it to the Monkey, because metal cuts wood.

The two layers disagree. On the chart there are 19 Tiger and Monkey pairs six years apart. Ten of them have the Monkey as the later birth, and both layers agree. Nine have the Tiger later, and the layers pull opposite ways.

So "the Monkey shapes the Tiger" is not a standing law about the pair. It describes one layer, and the year element overrules it the moment the birth order flips.

What that means at home is narrower than it sounds. The layer doing the shaping moves with birth order, and birth order is the one thing in a relationship that nobody picked.

The January line, which catches Tigers more often

A zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, not on 1 January. In 2022 that date was 1 February.

So a baby born on 20 January 2022 is not a Tiger. That birth is a Metal Ox, from the 2021 year. Early 2010 works the same way: Lunar New Year fell on 14 February, so the first six weeks of that year still belonged to the Ox.

People find this out late, usually after a decade of being told the wrong animal. The correction tends to arrive from a grandparent, or from a form that asks for the animal and offers a list, and by then the person has spent twenty or thirty years describing themselves with the wrong sign. The chart lists the exact start date for all 120 years, so it is checkable instead of a guess.

What the tradition claims for this pair

It claims a sequence. The Tiger moves first, and expects the room to move with it. The Monkey waits, finds the flaw, and speaks only after the Tiger has committed in front of everyone.

The sequence carries more weight than the labels, because a Monkey who speaks first gets read as impatient and a Tiger who waits gets read as sulking, and neither of those readings comes from the animals themselves.

It also places them outside each other's easy groups. The Tiger's comfortable set is Tiger, Horse, Dog. The Monkey's is Monkey, Rat, Dragon.

Their closest partners in the six harmonies are the Pig for the Tiger and the Snake for the Monkey. The Pig and the Snake are themselves a clash pair. That is a fact about the wheel, not a warning about your kitchen.

What the tradition does not claim

There is no classical source that says a clash ends a marriage, and I could not find one that names a winner between these two. The wheel ranks the animals by nothing. It assigns positions. It has no hierarchy to appeal to, which is why every page that promises one is selling something the tradition does not contain.

It does not say the Tiger must soften or the Monkey must stay quiet. Both of those are household advice dressed up as tradition.

One thing to know if you read further. Some bazi material puts yin, si and shen, so Tiger, Snake and Monkey, in a three-way punishment set. That is a different rule from the clash, and this page is not reading it. If another page quotes it, look for the text it names. Most name nothing.

Three things that actually help

Not communicate better. That one is not a method, and two Yang signs already communicate plenty.

  1. Split the decisions by type, not by mood. One of you owns anything that has to be settled today. The other owns anything that has to be checked before money moves. Write it down, both names, one line each. Two Yang signs can run a house together. They cannot co-own a single decision, because neither will be the one to let go.
  2. Say it in the room, or drop it. Both of them store a correction and deliver it three days later, which lands as an ambush. The rule that works: if it can be said now, it gets said now. If it cannot, it waits a day and then gets dropped, not saved.
  3. Put the disagreement in writing with a date on it. A spoken argument between two Yang signs has no end condition. One page, two options, a day you both agree to. The Tiger picks fast. The Monkey finds the hole in the pick, and the hole is usually real. Budget one round for it. One, not five. The paper is not there to win the argument, it is there to give the argument an ending, because two people who both go outward will keep going until something outside the conversation stops them.

Check your own pair

With both birth years, the compatibility calculator gives the animal reading and the element relation for your actual pair. The year chart gives the year element for any year from 1924 to 2043.

New to this? This short guide starts from the last digit of a birth year. A full reading uses the whole birth date, and the free one takes about a minute.

Written for entertainment and self-reflection. This page describes what the tradition says about a pairing. It does not predict whether a relationship lasts, and it should not be used to decide one.

Short answers

Do the Tiger and the Monkey clash?
Yes, in the sense the word is used here. They sit six places apart on the wheel, and that is what the word means. It describes a position, not an outcome.
Both are strong, so does one of them always get its way?
No. At branch level one of them gets shaped, and that is the Tiger. Being shaped is not the same as losing. The other side has to live with what it shaped.
Does the birth order matter?
It changes which layer wins. Monkey later, both layers point at the Monkey. Tiger later, the year element points back at the Tiger. Nine of the 19 pairs on the chart run that way.
Born in January, am I still a Tiger?
Check the date. Lunar New Year 2022 was 1 February, and 2010 was 14 February. A January birth in either year belongs to the year before.
