Ox and Goat compatibility

They sit opposite each other on the wheel, six places apart, and that is the whole of the clash at this level. The pair is still worth reading closely, because the standard explanation does not fit it.

The pair, inside the system

Ox is the second branch, chou. Goat is the eighth, wei.

Six places apart, so they face each other. That position is what the word clash means here. Nothing else is being claimed.

Now the part most English pages skip. Chou is earth. Wei is earth. Both branches are Yin, so every Ox year and every Goat year carries Yin, whatever the element.

Read the first two rows against the last two. Rat and Horse are water against fire, with two Yang signs on top. That pair argues in the open.

Ox and Goat bring one element to a collision that is supposed to be about opposing elements. Same polarity, same earth. That pair does not argue. It waits.

One caution before this gets used the wrong way. Earth in that column is the element of the branch, not your year element. The year element comes from the stem and rotates: 1997 is a Fire Ox, 2009 an Earth Ox, 2021 a Metal Ox.

A normal evening, two people, nothing dramatic

MomentThe OxThe Goat
Booking a tablePicks the place it already trusts.Asks the group, then agrees with whoever answered last.
The plan changesSays the plan was the plan.Changed it two days ago and did not mention it.
Something is wrong at homeWorks harder and says nothing.Stays polite and drifts.
MoneyKeeps the number in its head.Lent some out and did not write it down.
A family visitArrives on time, leaves after two hours.Arrives late with food for everyone.

None of that is a character flaw. It is two people avoiding the direct sentence in different ways. The Ox avoids it by working. The Goat avoids it by agreeing.

Then the bill comes for both habits. Nine months in, neither of them has said a single thing that needed saying.

Real years, and the element on top

The animal is the first layer. The year element is the second, and it changes how the pair reads.

There is a pattern on the year chart worth knowing. Put an Ox and a Goat six years apart and the later birth year's element controls the earlier one's. Nineteen adjacent pairs on the chart, nineteen matches. No exception.

Earlier yearSix years laterElementsHow it reads
1979 Goat1985 OxEarth, woodWood cuts earth. The Ox side pushes.
1991 Goat1997 OxMetal, fireFire melts metal. The Ox side wears down the Goat's standards.
2003 Goat2009 OxWater, earthEarth dams water. The Ox side blocks the exit.
2015 Goat2021 OxWood, metalMetal cuts wood. The Ox side trims what the Goat started.

Reverse the order and only the wording changes. A 1985 Ox with a 1991 Goat hands the controlling element to the Goat instead: metal on wood.

Two consequences. A chart that compares animals only is working with half the data. And the six-year rule that gets repeated online describes a tempo gap inside a household, not a verdict on it.

What the tradition claims for this pair

It claims a tempo gap, and a specific one. The Ox settles into a routine, then defends it as the correct routine. The Goat adjusts to whoever is in the room and calls that being reasonable.

It also places them outside each other's easy groups. The Ox's comfortable set is Ox, Snake, Rooster. The Goat's is Rabbit, Goat, Pig.

Their closest partners in the six harmonies are the Rat for the Ox and the Horse for the Goat. Each one's easiest match is a sign the other one clashes with. That is a fact about the wheel, not a warning about your kitchen.

What the tradition does not claim

There is no classical source that says a clash ends a marriage, and I could not find one that says the Ox should give way or the Goat should. The word is about two forces meeting head on.

One thing to know if you read further. Some bazi material puts chou and wei in a three-way punishment set with xu, the Dog. That is a different rule from the clash, and this page is not reading it.

If a page quotes it anyway, check whether the page names the text. Most do not name anything.

Three things that actually help

Not communicate better. Everyone knows that one, and it is not a method.

  1. One owner per decision, said out loud, once. The Ox owns the fixed costs and the standing commitments. The Goat owns the social calendar. The Goat moves that calendar without announcing it, and the Ox reads a moved calendar as a broken promise. So the Goat sends one line when something moves. Not a request. A notice.
  2. Ask for one answer by a date. "What do you want to do" gets two shrugs out of a Yin pair, and two shrugs turn into a month of nothing. Ask on Monday, offer two options, want the answer by Thursday. A Goat can choose between two. An Ox cannot choose out of open air.
  3. When the Ox goes quiet, ask a closed question. "Are you tired or angry" gets an answer. "What is wrong" gets nothing at all. The Ox will not open a topic it has not finished thinking about, and finishing can take a day.

Check your own pair

With both birth years, the compatibility calculator gives the animal reading and the element relation for your actual pair. The year chart gives the year element for any year from 1924 to 2043.

New to this? This short guide starts from the last digit of a birth year. A full reading uses the whole birth date, and the free one takes about a minute.

Written for entertainment and self-reflection. This page describes what the tradition says about a pairing. It does not predict whether a relationship lasts, and it should not be used to decide one.

Short answers

Ox and Goat clash, so should we not marry?
No. A clash is a position on the wheel. It describes a tempo gap, and the tradition has no rule that ends a relationship over one.
Is the six-year age gap the problem?
Six years apart does make you a clash pair, and it also puts one element over the other. 1979 with 1985 is earth and wood. 2015 with 2021 is wood and metal. Different pair, different reading.
Does our element matter more than our animal?
It gives a more specific reading. The animal sets the shape of the friction. The year element sets who gets worn down by it.
