Chinese zodiac in love
Compatibility charts answer one question: which animals are said to get along. That is not the question most people actually have. The real one is simpler. What am I like once I am close to someone?
Each element, up close
| Element | Shows care by | Needs back | When cornered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Making plans for both of you | Room to keep moving | Argues the principle, not the point |
| Fire | Saying it out loud, in front of people | Equal energy back | Says the thing everyone avoided |
| Earth | Remembering. Handling the boring parts. | Being relied on | Goes quiet and carries it alone |
| Metal | Fixing the actual problem | Directness. No games. | Withdraws, then gets cutting |
| Water | Reading your mood before you speak | Safety to be indirect sometimes | Slips away instead of confronting |
Four of those five reactions look like a problem from outside. All five are a defence. Worth knowing which one is yours.
The rules people actually use
Three patterns carry most of the weight in Chinese astrology. Most English pages get the third one wrong, so here they are plainly.
| Pattern | Pairs | How it is read |
|---|---|---|
| Six harmonies | Rat-Ox, Tiger-Pig, Rabbit-Dog, Dragon-Rooster, Snake-Monkey, Horse-Goat | The easy pairings |
| Three harmonies | Four groups of three, four years apart | Same tempo. Good side by side. |
| Clashes | Rat-Horse, Ox-Goat, Tiger-Monkey, Rabbit-Rooster, Dragon-Dog, Snake-Pig | Friction in tempo. Not a verdict. |
The clash is where English content goes wrong most often. It gets written up as doomed. It is not. Six pairs meet head on. Meeting head on is not the same as breaking.
If your pair sits in that third row, this page on Rat and Horse shows what the friction looks like day to day. The same shape applies to the other five.
Why the element outranks the animal here
Two Horses can be easy together or hard together. It depends which elements they carry. The animal gives the shape of the relationship. The element gives the temperature.
1990 and 1990 are both Metal Horses. 1990 and 2002 are Metal and Water. Same animal, different element, different reading.
The part nobody writes
Most compatibility content stops at whether two signs get along, which is a question you cannot act on. You are not going to leave someone because two animals sit opposite each other, and if you were, the chart would not be the reason.
What you can act on is the specific collision. The Rat wants the plan settled in advance. The Horse wants the day to stay open. Neither is wrong, and no amount of goodwill removes the difference. What removes it is deciding, once, who owns which decision, so the argument stops coming back every weekend under a different name.
That is the level the tradition is actually useful at. Not "are we compatible", but "where do we keep hitting the same wall".
What this will not do
It will not tell you whether the relationship lasts. No chart overrules what two people do on a Tuesday.
It will not tell you to leave, and it will not tell you that you are fine. Those are both ways of not answering.

Short answers
- Is this the same as my star sign?
- No. Your star sign comes from the month. Your zodiac animal comes from the lunar year. Same birthday, two systems, two answers.
- Do I need my birth time?
- Not for the year animal or the year element. The date is enough. A full reading uses the hour too, and skips it if you do not know it.
- Is any of this a prediction?
- No. These pages describe what the tradition says. They do not forecast events in your life.
