The five elements, as five kinds of people

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. The tradition describes each one by what happens under load. Not by a list of traits. That is the useful part, so that is what this page sticks to.

The five, side by side

TypeImageGood atComes apart when
WoodA tree going upStarting things and growing themNothing is moving forward
FireA flameWarmth. Says the thing first.Long silence, no feedback
EarthGroundKeeps promises. Holds the middle.Carrying everyone else alone
MetalA bladeStandards. Makes the call.No rules, no owner, no answer
WaterA riverReads the room. Finds a way round.Being pinned into one fixed route

Why the last column matters more

Anyone can write "Wood is creative". True, and useless. The tradition's own logic is about change, not labels. Wood feeds Fire. Fire leaves Earth. Earth holds Metal. Metal carries Water. Water grows Wood.

So each line is a strength paired with a failure mode. A Metal type is not cold. A Metal type with no room left has nothing to give, and from outside that reads as cold.

If you take one column off this page, take that one. Where do you come apart? You probably already know.

You are not just one

A full chart carries four elements, one for year, month, day and hour. They are not the same element.

The year element is the one anybody can look up. Traditional readers treat the day element as "you". Two people with the same year element can have completely different day elements.

Take 1990. Every 1990 birth is a Metal Horse on the year chart. That says nothing about the day pillar. For that you need the full date.

Reading one chart, start to finish

Take a birth on 15 June 1992. The year is 1992, which ends in 2, so the year element is Water. The animal is the Monkey. Water Monkey.

That is the whole of what a year chart can tell you, and it takes about ten seconds. Everything past that point, the day pillar, the hour pillar, the relations between the four elements in the chart, comes from the full date and a proper calculation rather than from a table you can scan.

This is also why two people who share a Water Monkey label can read as completely different people once you sit down with them. The label is real. It is just short, and short labels get treated as complete answers when they are not.

Anyone who has been told "you are a Water Monkey, so you are like this" and felt it did not fit has run into exactly that gap.

Two things this is not

Not a validated personality test. Nobody has tested it, and it is not used here as if someone had.

Not a forecast. Five elements is a vocabulary for temperament and change. The moment it turns into "you will succeed in 2027", it has left the source material behind.

Find your own

Your year element is the last digit of your birth year. The rule and three examples sit in this guide.

Short answers

Is this the same as my star sign?
No. Your star sign comes from the month. Your zodiac animal comes from the lunar year. Same birthday, two systems, two answers.
Do I need my birth time?
Not for the year animal or the year element. The date is enough. A full reading uses the hour too, and skips it if you do not know it.
Is any of this a prediction?
No. These pages describe what the tradition says. They do not forecast events in your life.
